Luscious lips can knock years off your looks

David Gunn, a research scientist at Unilever which funded the study, said: 'When we identified people who looked young for their age we were struck by the difference in their lips.  'It is a feature that is strongly genetically determined and relatively easy to measure.'

Researchers studied the faces of 102 pairs of white Dutch female twins aged 59 to 81 and 162 lone British white women aged 45 to 75 and found that wrinkles, sun damage and age spots were partly controlled by the environment and not just genes, as opposed to a receding hairline, greying hair, lip height which were.

The findings bode well for some of Hollywood's most voluptuous stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie who, thanks to their luscious lips, will look younger for longer while others age according to their years.

Luscious lips and aging

The trend reflects the way lips only reach their full volume in men and women in young adulthood and begin to shrink by the time they reach their late 30s.

But Gunn, who co-ordinated the research, found lip thickness in women over 60 varied hugely giving women with fuller lips at that age a distinctly youthful appearance. The pink part of the thinnest lips measured 3mm from the top of the upper lip to the bottom of the lower lip, while the same measurement of fuller, more luscious lips reached 2.2cm.
